It sometimes takes just someone with a fresh perspective to problem to come up with a solution. In Waterloo, Canada, 16 year-old student Daniel Burd's project won the top prize at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa. In addition to other awards he captured he won a $10,000 prize, a $20,000 scholarship, and the honor of being the first person that has discovered a microbe that may bring this enormous pollution problem to practically and safely help the environment.
We produce over 500 billion plastic bags per year and some take over 5,000 years to biodegrade. It's a wonderful thing to see our youth at work to make the world a better place.

Refreshing inventiveness

It's so nice to know that young adults are not discouraged and try to solve problems on their own without waiting for someone else to do it. That young man will go far with drive like that. Great story, Nick!

What is Amazing About It

is that is was so simple to figure out, it took a mind uncluttered with complex ideaology to see simple logic...........no corporation mindsets, no profit motives, no over-thinking.....just a good set of logical skills and good teachers....it is indeed gratifying for me as well!

Very impressive

Here in China, plastic bags have just been outlawed in supermarkets - as there is a huge problem here disposing of these dreaded things as well as all the other rubbish generated by this humungous population.  Good to see a young person come up with a solution.

Wow

Very impressive.  And I like the way his teacher is involved too.

I hope his ideas really do turn out to be viable

Looking at this, I wonder where his career will go from here.
