One Year Ago

Tags:

Today marks the start of my second year away from the UK. One year ago today, we were all sitting in our hotel, a bit shell shocked from hours of travel, wondering when our house would be ready.

We were excited about the new adventure of living in the Caribbean. Though that excitement has naturally tempered, we still feel lucky to be here.

I was wondering how soon I could get an internet connection to get my freelance writing business back on track. One year on, I still wonder that a couple of times a week. I guess you can't have everything.

One year ago, my daughter was on the verge of starting her first school year. Now she's about to start her second and is welcoming it with qualified approval - no child ever wants to go back to school after the summer holidays.

One year ago, we were pasty Brits. Now we're tanned and deceptively healthy looking.

One year ago, we started a new life. Today, and every day, the adventure continues.

Anniversaries are perfect opportunities for looking back... I remember when you were writing about the impending move and I thought you were brave. Uprooting (especially with a child) takes courage and faith. Moving to what most people consider paradise had to help, though...

paradise

Hi Inklings. I didn't feel particularly brave, though every move has obstacles. I think there are always challenges settling into a new society. It took me years when I went to new places in the UK and it will probably take a similar time here. However, I have a couple of old friends and have met a few people who will probably become new ones. And yes, paradise is a plus (except in hurricane season).

If you do not mind me

If you do not mind me asking, what brought the move on? Was it just the allure of the Caribbean, work or were you just following the sun?

climate

The climate is a powerful draw, that's for sure, Sire. I'm so familiar with the Caribbean that it has no particular mystique for me, but there are a lot of things that I love about it (and, as with anywhere, a few that I loathe).

Thanks for clearing that up.

Thanks for clearing that up. I wouldn't mind checking it out myself one day.
