Amazon's Kindle - Are you ready for an electronic book reader?

When Amazon.com announced its Kindle electronic book reader, two large camps of people appeared out of the woodwork. One camp praised the device with for it's paper-styled screen and ease of use. And one camp started listing the problems with it, calling it outmoded and doomed to begin with.

Newsweek suggests that Kindle is part of The Future of Reading while Business Week calls it The IPOD of Books.

While I like the fact that the connect charges are free, the $400 price tag is too expensive a risk for me at this point. Most of the computers and related software I've bought over the years didn't take long to (a) come down in price, and (b) become outmoded.

So, I think I'll wait.

At first glance, Kindle appears to be a green solution. It will reduce the need to ship heavy books around the country while cutting down on paper consumption. But, what's Kindle's energy footprint compared to the savings? That is, like many hybrid cars, does it cost more and/or use more energy to produce than it actually saves?

One way or the other, I think we all knew it would come to this, the electronic book readers we saw on the various Star Trek series becoming our future as well. While I'm not a fan of e-books, especially for fiction, I think Kindle--in one form or another--represents the handwriting on the wall.

What do you think?
Are you willing to give up paper books yet?

While my mythic adventure novel The Sun Singer is not on Kindle, it makes a great gift for the readers on your Christmas list.

Still cheaper and longer lasting than a steak dinner at Outback!

How to get your book on Kindle for less money!

A friend of mine, Irene Watson, provides the service to upload your book to Kindle for somewhere between $65 and $100. See

I think only my publisher can do that

Among other things, it would impact the royalty schedule I would think.

Thanks for the link. Something to check out.

like my books

I still don't like to read anything very long on-screen, and my kids really don't either. I've not heard of Kindle, will have to look at it...

I don't want to give up real books until I have to

If the price tag were lower, I'd be tempted to try it our sooner.

Ebook Options

I've been reading ebooks on my PDA for several years and I enjoy it. Well, that was until my PDA died Smiling I got another, but haven't gotten it working yet. That is a $25-50 option that works very well. If people ever comprehend there are plenty of options to read an ebook other than reading them on your computer, then ebooks have a much better chance. I have carpal tunnel and typing all day doesn't help - but holding my PDA which is about the same size as the Kindle - doesn't hurt my hands nearly as much. I also LOVE the backlight when I'm reading. I added this page to my website several years ago and its always been a popular destination for my website visitors. Plenty of useful info to help understand ebooks better- http://www.nikkileigh.com/why_e-books.htm and http://www.nikkileigh.com/ebook_readers.htm

Nikki, do you have trouble with the size of the unit?

Goodness knows, I see people reading text on smaller cell phones than mine and wonder how they tolerate the tiny classified-ad-size viewing window. The PDAs are bigger. but I wonder if they are big enough for the reading comfort one might get with a Kindle.

Size

My PDA's each allow me to adjust the size of the font. I always use the small text and especially with the backlight. But, its nice to have the font option Smiling It looks like the size of the Kindle is nice for reading.
