Last week on Twitter someone drew attention to a new BMW ad that would have been right at home in the mid-70s. That was the time when I taught newswriting classes at Temple University Center City and had a large collection of newspaper articles and ads that featured derogatory portrayals of women. In episode 6 of Season 2 of Lifetime Television’s ARMY WIVES there was something that bothered me very much: Betty, the owner of the Hump Bar, uses the word “gypped” to mean “cheated.”

It amazes me that the writing staff of ARMY WIVES did not realize that this is a derogatory word based on the word Gypsy. The use of this word as a verb is very offensive to Gypsies.  read more »

Lifetime TV’s episode 3 of season 2 of ARMY WIVES appears to have fallen off the back of a truck. It seemed to me as if I were watching a recycled TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL, or at the very least a recycled IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE.  read more »
